How to practise piano effectively
Paul Gonzalez ·
The most common mistake is playing a piece from beginning to end until it eventually comes right. That method mostly consolidates errors, because the difficult bar is always repeated at the same point of fatigue.
An effective session starts with three slow warm-up minutes, continues with one single measurable goal — two bars, one tempo, one fingering — and ends with a full read-through.
Slowing down is not a punishment: it is the only speed at which the brain can record an accurate gesture. If a passage fails three times in a row, the tempo is too fast.
Finally, write down what you worked on. A written practice plan after each lesson turns weeks of vague practice into visible progress.
