Playing piano with more expression

Many students play accurately but flatly. Not from a lack of sensitivity, but because nobody showed them that expression is decided, notated and practised.
Start by identifying the peak of each phrase: the note everything moves towards. A phrase without a destination always sounds monotonous.
Then work on balance: in almost any piano piece, the melody must clearly dominate the accompaniment. Record yourself — the gap is usually wider than you think.
Finally, breathe. A micro-breath before an important phrase changes the listening experience more than an extra dynamic level.
